Both matches were very intense. Still eventually Turkish side fell to onslaught of Dynamo “machine”…
The White-Blues covered a great distance to come to Bursa. On March 3 they spent the whole day on the way. Paris – Sofia – Damascus – Istanbul. On March 4 Kyivans covered 240 km by bus and finally reached Bursa best hotel Celik Palas. The following day they had to face local Bursaspor.
Turkish media followed Dynamo friendlies in Belgium and France. They mentioned that Kyivans are the cornerstone of the USSR national team. Journalists called Rudakov the tallest goalkeeper of Europe, Kolotov – brain of the team and Muntian – engine with limitless amount of fuel. Bursaspor head coach Gegic stated that “even if his trainees lose in will be a great lesson for them”.
For some reasons the game started thirty minutes later than it was supposed to.
Muntian unleashed the first shot on target 10 minutes after the kickoff and the ball even touched the bar. Seven minutes later Kolotov eluded two defenders on the flank and put a cross to Blokhin, who missed.
The White-Blues acted very orderly. Confident play of Konkov, Muntian, Veremeev and Kolotov in the midfield didn’t let the home side create chances.
The goal that handed Dynamo victory was scored as follows: Veremeev passed to Blokhin, who left the ball inside the box for Onyshchenko and the latter hit the target.
Nothing actually changed after the break. Our team was satisfied with the score and looked a bit tired.
The following day Turkish media stated that “Kyivans taught Bursaspor a good football lesson”.

Historic breakthrough
Of course Bursaspor weren’t the strongest possible rival, but one couldn’t be sure that Dynamo would recondition quickly in March. About hundred thousand supporters came to follow the second leg at the stadium in Kyiv.
Still at first one should recall February of that year. Kyivans played friendly against Ararat Yerevan. The White-Blues won that game, but that’s not the point. The main peculiarity of that sparring was Kyivans’ tactics. In the first half they weren’t very active, used counterattacks and avoided scrimmage. After the break they increased the speed, applied pressure and their attacks were endless.
The return match against Bursaspor was almost the copy of that friendly.
Dynamo didn’t hasten at first and let visitors return to their penalty area in time. Turkish side forwards tried to show themselves off, but couldn’t cope with Kyivans’ defenders. They unleashed the only shot on target only three minutes before the break.
As for the second half, the White-Blues started it in a totally different manner. They shocked Bursaspor, whose whole squad had to defend. Muntian was definitely the man of the match. Blokhin and Onyshchenko also became more active. Kolotov rushed to opponent’s goal, Veremeev created chances and Troshkin approached Turkish side box.
After referee awarded penalty for Dynamo and Kolotov converted from the spot all visitors’ hopes were ruined.
Several minutes before the time the ball hit Bursaspor defender after Muntian’s shot and crossed the goal line.
Kyivans made their debut in euro cups 10 years before that, but that was the first time they reached semifinals.
