Dynamo Kyiv's new signing Pierre Mounguengue spoke about his decision to join the club, his first impressions, expectations, and ambitions with the White-Blues.
– What were your first emotions when you learned about Dynamo's interest and realised you would be moving to Kyiv?
– I was surprised by Dynamo's interest. Considering all the circumstances, it wasn't exactly a typical situation. As for the move itself, it was simply a matter of mental preparation. Before making the decision, we carried out thorough research and learned as much as possible about the club and all the other details.
– You came through the Paris Saint-Germain academy. What are the most important lessons you took from one of Europe's strongest clubs?
– Being developed at Paris Saint-Germain instilled many sporting values in me: discipline, hard work, respect, and the desire to win. I also experienced extremely tough competition there, which played a major role in my development.
– Why did you choose Dynamo? What convinced you that now was the right time to make this move?
– I needed to choose the best option for my career development - not money or status, but the right opportunity to progress. We had many conversations with Dynamo's representatives. They presented the club's project and explained how they see my role within the team, and that was very convincing. It is important for me to have the opportunity to play, improve, and test myself in European competitions.
– Before signing, did you speak to anyone familiar with Ukrainian football or Dynamo? What advice did you receive?
– I didn't know much about Ukrainian football before this. Of course, everyone in the football world knows Dynamo. The club has developed many outstanding players. During my visit to Kyiv, I spoke with club president Ihor Surkis about Ukrainian football and Dynamo. He gave me several pieces of advice on how to adapt to the team more quickly.
– What were your first impressions of Kyiv, the club's training base, and your new teammates?
– My agents and I received a wonderful welcome in Kyiv. Everything was organised with professionalism and respect. We spent a few days at the training base and also had the opportunity to see the city. I liked everything very much. The club has excellent facilities for player development. I joined the team only recently, but everyone welcomed me warmly, and I'm happy to be here.
– You're only 18, but you've already left France. How difficult is it to begin a new chapter in another country at such a young age?
– I left home when I was 13. The academy prepared me well for that experience. We got used to being away from our families, so it has become normal for me. Situations like this are part of professional football. Players often sacrifice the comfort of home and time with their loved ones, even from childhood. I'm ready for this new challenge. Right now, my goal is to continue developing and help Dynamo both in the Ukrainian league and in European competitions.
– How would you describe yourself as a footballer? What are your greatest strengths?
– As a professional athlete, I enjoy working hard and constantly striving to improve. My main qualities are creating danger in front of the opponent's goal, being actively involved in the game, and always working for the team's success.
– What aspect of your game are you focusing on most to take the next step in your development?
– I continue working on every part of my game, but I pay particular attention to finishing chances because that's my position and I love scoring goals. Of course, there are many areas to improve, as modern football requires players in every position to possess a wide range of skills.
– Which famous footballers did you learn from or admire as a child?
– When I was young, Cristiano Ronaldo was my inspiration.
– What do you hope to achieve at Dynamo over the next one or two years? What goals have you set for yourself?
– Over the next two years, I want to win trophies and titles with the team in Ukraine. This season is especially important because Dynamo will celebrate its 100th anniversary next year. And why not eventually play in the Champions League as well?
– Did you know much about Dynamo's history before joining? Do you remember any legendary players or famous matches?
– I knew a little about the club's history. It's a great European club that produced three Ballon d'Or winners and plays at a stadium named after the legendary coach Valeriy Lobanovskyi. Everyone in football understands the importance of Andriy Shevchenko and Valeriy Lobanovskyi in European football history. Illya Zabarnyi is currently playing in France, and I know he came through Dynamo's academy.
I also knew about Dynamo's matches against Bayern in 1975 - they're part of football history. Overall, I'll now have a great opportunity to learn even more about Dynamo's history.
– What would you like to say to Dynamo fans who are eagerly awaiting your debut?
– I'd like to tell the fans that I'm very happy to be here. I hope to represent them with pride and bring them plenty of joy on the pitch. I hope for a warm welcome and patience from them. I fully understand the responsibility and pressure that await me in Kyiv because Dynamo is the biggest and most popular club in Ukraine, and it has to prove its level every single year.
– How would you like people in Kyiv to remember you in a few years?
– I want people to remember me as a player who made his mark in the club's history during its 100th anniversary and in the seasons that follow. More than anything, besides winning, I want to give the fans great memories through my performances and help the team achieve success. I know the difficult times that Ukrainians are going through, I know your country is suffering, and I will do everything I can to give Dynamo supporters positive emotions.
– Last season you made your first-team debut for Paris Saint-Germain. What did that moment mean to you?
– I was incredibly happy and proud to make my debut for Paris Saint-Germain's first team. It will remain one of the most memorable days of my life, especially because it was also my mother's birthday.
– Next week Dynamo will play its first official match of the new season. How would you assess your readiness for that game and those that follow?
– I only arrived a few days ago. Every day I work hard to be ready for these matches, and I hope to get the opportunity to play very soon.
